Say 'hello' to the little people

Did you know that Manannan is actually a rock star, and that the little people are always holding amazing parties in their hidden lairs?

All this, and more besides, is completely true, according to the team behind the island’s newest children’s theatre group, ’Hello Little People’, who are preparing to launch their debut show, entitled ’A Beg Adventure’ in Castle Rushen at the weekend.

The ’Hello Little People’ theatre group is aimed at entertaining and enthralling children up to the age of 11 with unique, high energy and funny shows and has been put together by professional actors Michelle James and Chloe Shimmin.

’We have created "A Beg Adventure", which is inspired by Manx myths and legends,’ said Michelle

’The show itself follows a character called Tom Beg and he goes off on an adventure. He finds himself at a little people’s party and he meets Manannan, and lots of other well-known characters from Manx myths and folklore.

’We have taken these characters and almost flipped them on their heads, in a way. We’ve taken the Buggane and, instead of him being a scary monster we have him quite funny and quirky, and a bit more lovable instead.’

’We wanted to really encourage kids to get into the idea of Manx folklore and made a show with lots of laughter and humour in it too,’ said Chloe.

’We play all the roles, as it is only the two of us and we have to make sure the energy is high and the laughs are loud and everyone has a good time.’

They say that they intend to bring the theatre to people and hold their performances in interesting and random locations, with the vibe and emphasis very much focused on the whole family being able to come along and enjoy the show together.

Both actors have returned to the island after spending the past few years studying and working in the UK.

Once the coronavirus hit the UK and the social restriction measures came into play, both saw their busy careers come to a shuddering halt and were both moved to return home to the island.

However, rather than sit back and bemoan their fate, both actors, who were friends from working together on shows in the island in their younger years, joined together and put their skills to good use.

’There is no children’s theatre company in the Isle of Man,’ said Chloe.

’It is almost an alien concept over here, that there never really seems to be a theatre show created here just aimed at children.

’I think it is something that is need here and it makes us want to do more and develop more and just see where it can take us.

’It feels amazing to go from all that sudden shock and uncertainty to be able to put together something that lets us do what we love,’ Chloe added.

’So many of our friends are unable to create anything in public or have those chances and we are just excited about being able to use our skills.’

’Hello Little People’ make their debut at Castle Rushen on Saturday, September 5th and 6th, with three shows from 11am, 1pm and 3pm.
